Womble Bond Dickinson's Leeds office has completed the agreements for a £34m community stadium and leisure project for City of York Council.

The project involves the design, construction and operation of a new 8,000 seat community sports stadium, hub and leisure centre; and the operation of the Energise leisure centre and Yearsley swimming pool.

The stadium, which is due to open in 2019, will provide a new home for York City FC and York City Knights RLFC. It will also include a community hub consisting of a library, NHS specialist outpatient services, and a retail unit and office space for local charity York Against Cancer. The stadium, hub and leisure centre will be built alongside an associated commercial development including an IMAX cinema and a number of retail and restaurant units.

The deal was led by Partners Jackie Gray and Iain Greenshields from the Womble Bond Dickinson Projects & Procurement Team. The core project team also consisted of Ian Ward, Andrew Hirst, and Nicholas Moss, from the Projects and Procurement Team; and Vicky McCombe, Sarah Wales and Laura Howell, from the Construction Team.

Jackie Gray, Partner at Womble Bond Dickinson in Leeds, said:

"We are delighted that our team of specialist local lawyers were able to complete these agreements successfully, ensuring work can now begin on this exciting project for the city. This has been a long and complex project, however, our team worked closely with the Council's project team and were able to provide solution focused advice that led to the successful closure of a deal which will deliver fantastic new sports, leisure and retail facilities for the residents of York. "

Councillor David Carr, Leader of City of York Council, said:

“The completion of all the necessary contracts is a huge step forward, with construction workers on site before Christmas.

We have always been committed to delivering the Community Stadium and accompanying facilities which, once complete, will be a great asset for the city and residents. With new jobs and significant investment it will bring huge and long-lasting economic benefits to the city.”
