Womble Bond Dickinson (WBD) has advised the London Borough of Lewisham (Lewisham Council) on the planning obligations underpinning Landsec’s £1.3bn redevelopment of Lewisham Shopping Centre, one of London’s most significant regeneration schemes.
On 8 July, Lewisham Council granted planning permission for the landmark scheme, which is expected to be delivered over a phased programme spanning around ten years. The redevelopment will bring forward new shops and restaurants, homes including affordable housing, co-living units and student accommodation, a live music venue and community café, a new rooftop park and further community spaces in the heart of Lewisham.
The scheme is set to revitalise Lewisham town centre and support substantial employment opportunities during both the construction and operational phases. Its impacts will be mitigated through a comprehensive package of planning obligations secured by a section 106 agreement, including a financial contribution towards improvements to Lewisham Station and commitments to public art and wider community benefits.
WBD’s London Planning & Infrastructure team advised Lewisham Council throughout the planning process. Partner Sarah White attended the Planning Committee meeting in October last year as legal adviser to the Council. Following the resolution to grant planning permission, Sarah, supported by managing associate Jessica Rose, led the drafting and negotiation of the section 106 agreement, a complex and substantial document securing the measures required to support the delivery of the development.
