Jack Bidgood and Casey Whitehorn are now paralegals in our OnShore team, but their career path started through our award winning apprenticeship scheme. They give us an insight into their experience.
The apprenticeship has allowed us both to develop our technical and interpersonal skills whilst providing us with a qualification which is the first step in achieving qualification via the CILEx pathway. The apprenticeship framework consists of both exams and coursework modules. Apprentices are given one day each week in their own study area to focus solely on tasks specific to achieving their qualification i.e. exam preparation and competency demonstration. They are also allocated an assessor from CILEx to support their learning and development, ensuring that deadlines to demonstrate particular competencies are met and that exam preparation is effective. In addition, as you advance through the apprenticeship you will be working with your fellow apprentices, as well supporting younger apprentices on a daily basis, sharing your previous experiences with them to assist in their own growth.
The apprenticeship exceeded both of our expectations and we have gained great confidence from the fact that we went above and beyond the job description to cement our position as valuable resources to our respective teams.
Since graduation, we have accepted full time roles as paralegals within the Recovery+ team, where we have been able to put everything we learnt during the apprenticeship scheme into practice. Whilst there are additional responsibilities which come with working at paralegal level (billing targets, increased workload and file management), we both feel we have been prepared well to deal with the demands of such challenges. In terms of our continued technical development, we have been funded by the firm to continue our studies with CILEx and progress our legal careers further.
