Amendments to procurement legislation

The Free Trade Agreements with Australia and New Zealand have prompted amendments to current procurement regulations to give effect to the UK's obligations under those trade agreements. The amendments were laid before Parliament on 4 May 2023 and are due to come into force on 25 May 2023 under the Public Procurement (International Trade Agreements) (Amendment) Regulations 2023/484. The amendments will only apply to procurements commenced after the 2023 Regulations come into force.

Government U-turns on Brexit Bonfire Bill - good news for UK businesses

The Retained EU Law (Revocation and Reform) Bill 2022, commonly referred to as the Brexit Bonfire Bill, is intended to end the principle of the supremacy of EU law. The Bill empowers UK Government to restate, revoke and replace retained EU law. So far, in the region of 4,800 pieces of retained EU law have been identified and this total is likely to keep increasing. UK Government says the Bill will remove needless bureaucracy and encourage innovation. However, many businesses who operate across the UK and EU are less enthused about the prospect of abandoning EU laws and the resultant regulatory divergence, since complying with two different regulatory regimes adds cost and complexity.

Womble Bond Dickinson advises PD Ports on new deal to bring more sailings to Teesport

International law firm Womble Bond Dickinson (WBD) has advised PD Ports on its new long-term deal with worldwide logistics specialist CLdN to bring additional weekly sailings to Teesport.

Already operational, the new service consists of four weekly round trip sailings from Zeebrugge and Rotterdam, Europe's largest seaport, and reinforces Teesport’s position as a critical gateway for international trade. The expansion, which is driven by customer demand to have direct and reliable access for freight units to the North of England, will enable shippers to bring cargo closer to its end destination; avoiding road mileage and reducing CO2 emissions.

Major economic boost with official launch of UK’s first freeports

The news that the UK's first freeports in Plymouth, Solent, and Teesside are now fully up and running is welcome and positive news for the economy. Each of these Freeports, which now have official sign off will receive up to £25 million seed funding and potentially tens of millions of pounds in locally retained business rates to upgrade local infrastructure and stimulate regeneration.
