How might the next general election affect planning policy?

Although the next general election could be held as late as January 2025, it is widely expected that it will be called earlier. Current opinion polls suggest that Labour may be the next government in power but as we know from recent elections the polls don't always give the full picture.

Whilst the parties have of course not yet published their election manifestos there have been some noteworthy announcements related to planning policy from the Labour party, particularly around the time of its party conference which was held 8-11 October 2023. It is these Labour party announcements which we take a closer look at below.

World's first vagina museum finds new home thanks to pro bono support from Womble Bond Dickinson

International law firm Womble Bond Dickinson (WBD) has provided pro bono services to help ensure the world's first museum dedicated to the vagina was able to find a new home.

London's Vagina Museum, which was forced to shut its doors in February after its property guardianship ended, has now reopened in a larger location on Bethnal Green's Poyser Street after WBD secured the lease to the new property.

Womble Bond Dickinson advises North Somerset Council on acquisition of Grade II* Listed Birnbeck Pier

International law firm Womble Bond Dickinson (WBD) has advised North Somerset Council on its acquisition of the Grade II* Listed Birnbeck Pier in Weston-super-Mare.

The Council is working with the Royal National Lifeboats Institution (RNLI) and Historic England to secure the preservation of the Pier. This will allow RNLI to resume operations from Birnbeck, which had to be suspended when the condition of the pier made it unsafe to access the lifeboat station. The Council aims to re-open the Pier to the public, which closed in 1994, when the required works are finished.

Technical consultation on the proposed Infrastructure Levy

The Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC), has sought views in advance of drafting regulations to implement its proposals. The consultation questions cover thresholds for applying the proposed Levy and the application of receipts. It is asking for views on how to deliver infrastructure and affordable housing, as well as a wider set of questions about how to introduce the Levy.
