Charities Act 2022: further changes coming into force on 7 March 2024

When the Charities Act 2022 (the Act) first received Royal Assent back on 24 February 2022, it introduced a number of new laws with the aim of simplifying and modernising the regulation of charities in England and Wales. Since then, these changes have been implemented in stages with the latest tranche now due to come into force on Thursday 7 March. I have had the privilege of volunteering at a local charity in the North East and have seen first-hand the profound benefits of the practical and compassionate support it provides. My reward for simply giving-up some time was a feeling of well-being (and a reality check on my stress levels!). However, the rewards for those considering philanthropy can extend from emotional into financial and practical benefits too.

Frequently those with accumulated wealth have a desire to ‘give something back’ but aren’t particularly comfortable with Inheritance Tax (IHT) as a way of doing so. As part of their estate planning, philanthropic legacies could instead be used to direct funds to preferred charities on death.

World's first vagina museum finds new home thanks to pro bono support from Womble Bond Dickinson

International law firm Womble Bond Dickinson (WBD) has provided pro bono services to help ensure the world's first museum dedicated to the vagina was able to find a new home.

London's Vagina Museum, which was forced to shut its doors in February after its property guardianship ended, has now reopened in a larger location on Bethnal Green's Poyser Street after WBD secured the lease to the new property.

New social media guidance for charities

Charities Act 2022 - what are the latest changes?

Following implementation of the first tranche of provisions of the Charities Act 2022 on 31 October 2022, the eagerly awaited second tranche of provisions came into force on 14 June 2023. Charities will welcome in particular the relaxations of the regime governing disposals of charity land and increased freedoms for trustees in dealing with permanent endowment property contained in the latest provisions.

Charities with property interests in Scotland: do you need to register your land?

If your charity is (or your charity trustees are) the named owner(s) of land in Scotland, or the tenant under a registered or recorded lease of more than 20 years of land in Scotland, then you may need to register on the Register of Persons Holding a Controlled Interested in Land (RCI) before 1 April 2023, unless certain exceptions or exemptions apply. Certain charities will not be required to register.
