Lawyers from both Womble Bond Dickinson (WBD) UK and US played key roles at the International Bar Association (IBA) Annual Conference in Copenhagen, contributing to discussions on mining, international investment and carbon markets.

UK partner Colin Graham joined a panel discussion exploring how international investment treaties are reshaping the global mining industry. The session examined how recently negotiated bilateral and multilateral agreements, including those involving major economies and resource-rich jurisdictions, are influencing access to critical minerals and natural resources, cross-border investment decisions and the geopolitical landscape surrounding mining projects.

With demand for the minerals needed to support the energy transition continuing to grow, the panel considered the increasing importance of investment protection frameworks and the role international treaties play in unlocking mining opportunities across global markets. The discussion also explored the implications for investors, governments and mining companies navigating an evolving legal and regulatory environment.

Joining him from our US practice, Francisco Balduzzi co-chaired a session focused on the rapid growth of carbon trading markets and the legal considerations surrounding emissions trading systems and voluntary carbon markets. The session explored evolving regulatory regimes, market opportunities and the role lawyers play as organisations increasingly participate in carbon trading mechanisms.

Also representing the firm, US partner José Luis Vittor participated in the Energy, Environment, Natural Resources and Infrastructure Law Section (SEERIL) Open Business Meeting as a member of the section's council.

The IBA Annual Conference brought together lawyers and business leaders from around the world to discuss key legal, regulatory and commercial developments affecting international business.
