International law firm Womble Bond Dickinson (WBD) has advised XPENG, the smart electric vehicle manufacturer, on a strategic agreement with International Motors, to transition to direct operations in the UK.

The move forms part of XPENG's next phase of growth in the UK market and sees the business establish a national sales company, giving it full responsibility for the strategic and commercial development of the brand in the UK. The transition is intended to support increased investment in brand development, the retailer network, customer experience and the introduction of an expanding product portfolio, while maintaining continuity for retailers and customers through the continued involvement of International Motors.

The WBD team was led by corporate partner David Ridley, with support from associate Hannah Severgnini, solicitor Ellie Jefferson and solicitor apprentice Haaris Ghafoor. As the XPENG entity is based in Holland the WBD team also worked closely with Walter van Overbeek and his team at Habraken Rutten.

David Ridley, corporate partner at Womble Bond Dickinson, said: “We are delighted to have supported XPENG on this important step in the development of its UK operations. As international automotive businesses continue to adapt their market strategies and invest in closer relationships with customers, arrangements of this nature require clear, commercial advice across corporate, regulatory and operational considerations.

“This is another strong example of our team advising on a cross-border automotive sector transaction and reflects the breadth of experience we bring to clients operating in fast-moving, international markets. It has been a pleasure working with the XPENG team and supporting them as they continue to develop their presence in the UK.”

A spokesperson for XPENG said: “The establishment of our UK national sales company marks an important next step in XPENG's long-term commitment to the market. By combining direct XPENG leadership and investment with International Motors' proven local capabilities, we are creating the right structure to scale the brand, strengthen the customer experience and bring our next generation of intelligent vehicles to more customers across the UK.

"Many thanks to David and the rest of his team at WBD for their excellent client service and sector knowledge, which helped us implement the new structure efficiently and in a way which ensured we are in the best position possible to service the UK market."

XPENG is a technology company and smart electric vehicle manufacturer with a growing international footprint. Its UK operations form part of the company's wider European growth strategy, with new models expected to broaden its product offering for UK customers.
