ROME— IBA 2018, the annual conference of the International Bar Association, brought thousands of attorneys and legal professionals to Rome for the legal industry’s largest international gathering. As The Transatlantic Law Firm Close To Home, Womble Bond Dickinson was well-represented, with attorneys from the UK and US attending.

Womble Bond Dickinson attorneys Julian Hamblin (UK), Randy Hanson (US), Melinda Davis Lux (US), Paul Stockley (UK), Joe Tirone (US) and Simon Watts (UK) attended the conference, which took place Oct. 7-12.

Romano Prodi, the former Prime Minister of Italy, was the keynote speaker for the 2018 IBA Annual Conference. Other notable speakers included International Criminal Court Prosecutor Dr. Fatou Bensouda, UK MP Ken Clarke and former President of Ireland Mary Robinson. The week also featured more than 200 working sessions across a wide range of legal topics.

Julian Hamblin is the joint head of the firm's Technology sector, and is a member of the IP, Technology and Data team. His main areas of practice are in information technology and e-commerce, including the development and licensing of software, outsourcing, online services and data protection. His clients include major retailers, government bodies, and financial institutions. Hamblin advises on large IT outsourcing projects, focusing on the regulated financial services sector. He is also known for his work on retail IT systems.

Randy Hanson advises businesses and their owners on U.S. and cross-border corporate and commercial transactions, including mergers and acquisitions. He has three decades of experience serving companies in a wide range of industries, and he has significant, in-country experience in China and Mexico.

Melinda Davis Lux focuses her practice on complex business deals, including mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, and financing transactions. She also advises public companies, directors, and stockholders with respect to securities law and corporate governance matters, including SEC reporting requirements.

Paul Stockley is head of the firm’s Oil and Gas Team. He has worked in the oil and gas industry for over 20 years. Prior to joining the firm, Stockley was senior legal counsel for six years with Hess Corporation. His range of experience covers the full E&P cycle and includes licensing, concessions, production sharing contracts, joint ventures (including joint bidding agreements and joint operating agreements), development contracts, transportation, processing, marketing and sales as well as share/asset acquisitions and disposals and farm-out transactions.

Joe Tirone is the co-leader of Womble Bond Dickinson’s Energy & Natural Resources Sector. His practice focuses on energy project and infrastructure development, mergers and acquisitions and project finance. He has represented energy sector companies in structuring, negotiating and drafting a range of complex contracts and agreements. Tirone advises various stakeholders in a broad range of issues in the renewable generation sector, including developers, equity participants, equipment providers, and financing parties. His experience includes working as in-house counsel for an independent power producer in connection with the development, construction and finance of power generation facilities.

Simon Watts is the UK firm's US Desk Head and a member of the global board of Womble Bond Dickinson. In these capacities, Watts is part of the team which leads the strategic direction of Womble Bond Dickinson. A corporate partner with over 25 years' experience, Watts focuses on corporate transactions and advisory work. His areas of experience include mergers & acquisitions, joint ventures, private equity, IPOs and other capital markets work and corporate regulatory matters.
