BOSTON—Max Woodbury is a wheelchair/handchair-mobile athlete who was eagerly anticipating competing in the 2019 Boston Marathon. But he isn’t a bike mechanic, and he needed a hand reassembling his road bike after taking it through airport security on his way in to Boston.

That’s when the Womble Bond Dickinson family stepped in to help. Max’s friend, Raleigh attorney Ripley Rand, asked his colleagues in Boston if they could refer a bike mechanic who possibly might be available to help.

Boston Office Managing Partner Sarah Keefe’s husband, Michael Schuler, is a USA Cycling certified mechanic, among other things. Michael got Max’s ride reassembled for competition the day before the race, allowing Max to be ready to go at the starting line on Patriots’ Day.

Max finished at 2:07.48 and was 34th of all the wheelchair racers!
