PHILADELPHIA—Womble Bond Dickinson was well-represented at the 2019 Lavender Law Conference & Career Fair, which took place Aug. 7-9 in Philadelphia. Columbia, SC Office Managing Partner Kevin Hall spoke on two panels, while attorneys Daniel Attaway, David Carter and Mason Freeman and Kate Rooney Thomson, the firm’s Assistant Director for Lateral Attorney Recruiting, also attended.

Hall took part in a panel discussion on “Red State Rebuttal - Advocating for LGBTQ Clients in Conservative Regions”. In this conversation, Hall and other practitioners from Alabama, Arizona, Kansas, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Utah discussed advocating for LGBTQ clients (both in urban and rural areas) and provide examples of how applicable statutes and policies impact their clients’ outcomes.

Then, Hall took part in a second panel discussion on “Pushing Back Against "No Promo Homo" Laws and Other Restrictions on LGBTQ-Affirming Curricular Content”. Seven states currently have so-called “No Promo Homo” (NPH) laws that prohibit teachers from discussing LGBTQ people or subjects in a positive light or, sometimes, discussing them at all.

The Lavender Law Conference is presented annually by the LGBT Bar and is the largest LGBTQ+ and ally legal conference in the country, with approximately 1,700 attendees attending annually. Womble Bond Dickinson was a sponsor of the event at the Supporter level.
