Ric Morton, a cherished partner of Womble Bond Dickinson’s Business Litigation Group and Environmental and Toxic Tort Team, passed away following a courageous fight against cancer. Ric passed June 4 surrounded by family, including his wife, Lynn, and his children, Nolan, Mason and Jack.
Ric was a tenacious litigator who defended major energy and manufacturing clients in class actions and mass tort cases; often, opposing counsel were nationally recognized plaintiffs’ firms. He defended those difficult cases while always remaining a consummate professional, and his work led to numerous awards and honors for his environmental defense practice. At the firm, he helped lead, build and grow the firm’s transatlantic Energy Litigation practice.
But Ric was much more than an outstanding attorney. Before practicing law, he worked as a geologist in the mining industry. Even while practicing law, Ric continued to explore parts of Nevada—and even staked claims for gold. He was a competitive cyclist and nationally ranked adventure racer throughout his adult life. He also was passionate about home brewing. This hobby led to Ric joining some friends to start Town Brewing Co., a craft brewery and brewpub in Charlotte.
Most of all, Ric was a beloved husband, father and friend. As a long-time partner and friend Brad De Vore said, “Ric was a true partner and willing teammate. He worked with many other WBD attorneys in a variety of our offices. He mentored many young attorneys. Ric was an optimist by nature and passionate about his work.”
No funeral arrangements or memorials have been announced at this time. Please keep Ric’s family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
