Kim Stogner, Carl King To Take Part in 59th Annual Southern Federal Tax Institute
Oct 24 2024
Womble Bond Dickinson’s Kim Stogner and Carl King will take part in the 59th Annual Southern Federal Tax Institute in Atlanta, Georgia from October 21-25, 2024.
Stogner, a leader in the firm’s Private Wealth sector, serves on the Board of Trustees for the Southern Federal Tax Institute and is a co-organizer of this year’s event.
King, a partner in the firm’s Private Wealth sector, will co-present on October 24 alongside Brook H. Lester of Diversified Trust. King’s comments will largely focus on issues related to state fiduciary income tax matters. In 2019 King helped co-author the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel’s (ACTEC’s) Amicus brief in North Carolina Dept of Revenue v. Kaestner 1992 Family Trust, the leading case in this area.
The seemingly mundane task of choosing a fiduciary to serve a family can have many long-term impacts on the trust and beneficiaries. King and Lester’s session, “Choice of Fiduciary: Governance Issues, Successors and Tax Impacts” will focus on how the choice of a trustee can impact the family governance model, including family harmony, as well as the governance of any business operations held in the trust. The presentation will also explore the difficult task of trustee succession, particularly for dynasty trusts. These choices can have challenging multi-state income, and potentially estate tax impacts, that need to be addressed before a fiduciary is named.
