Womble Bond Dickinson Private Wealth partner Carl King recently presented a national webinar, "State Taxation of Estates and Trusts," hosted by the American College of Trust and Estate Council (ACTEC).

The program delivered guidance on how states define and tax "resident trusts." Carl explored the implications of the landmark Kaestner decision, in which he helped draft an amicus brief to the U.S. Supreme Court.  He discussed pathways for fiduciaries to navigate Due Process and Commerce Clause considerations, key factors affecting trust residency, fiduciary responsibilities, and the role of beneficiary connections. Attendees gained insights into how state laws and court decisions are reshaping compliance risks, as well as real-world examples to help identify and avoid common tax pitfalls.

Carl was joined on the webinar by Andrea Chomakos, Esq., a former Chief Fiduciary Officer at a large regional bank.
