Mike Tobin, Preston Heard & Barry Herman Speak at 2017 Innovation & IP Business Summit

Womble Carlyle attorneys Mike Tobin, Preston Heard and Barry Herman all spoke at the 2017 Innovation & IP Business Summit.

Tobin gave a presentation on “Managing an IP Strategy Through the Lifecycle of a Product or Service.”

Heard participated in an extended panel discussion on “The Impact of Context and Timing on IP Value, Opportunity and Risk.”

Finally, Herman took part in a panel discussion titled “Key Decision Components for Innovation & IP Investment.”

Intangible assets represent approximately 80 percent of the value of the Standard & Poor 500 and dominate the ability of companies to compete on both a global and regional landscape. Successful operating executives often outperform their competition through better innovation and through better legal protection of their intangible assets to leverage them as intellectual property.

The 2017 Innovation & IP Business Summit was aimed at senior operating executives and addressed current best practices for developing, strategically positioning, and leveraging innovation and intellectual property to increase business performance, as well as fostering and promoting innovation in the organization.

The event took place May 17-19 in Isle of Palms and was presented by the Faber Entrepreneurship Center at the University of South Carolina’s Darla Moore School of Business. Womble Carlyle was a Platinum Sponsor of the summit.

Mike Tobin has two decades of experience representing clients in complex technology and intellectual property transactions, including technology development and acquisition arrangements;  patent and trademark license agreements; intellectual property M&A and financing transactions; and internet legal disputes.  Tobin is a registered patent attorney with significant IP litigation experience.

Preston Heard is an experienced intellectual property litigation attorney who has represented clients in U.S. District Court in numerous states, as well as before the International Trade Commission, and before the PTAB in post-grant proceedings. Heard’s practice is focused primarily on patent litigation and covers a broad range of technologies, including the mechanical, computer, and chemical arts.

Barry Herman is an intellectual property litigation partner working in Baltimore. He represents both domestic and foreign clients in a wide range of intellectual property matters, with an emphasis on patent litigation in district courts, the International Trade Commission, and the USPTO.
