North Carolina Lawyers Weekly recently recognized its 50 Most Influential Women for 2025, and two of those honorees—Lisa Rushton and Sarah Motley Stone—are Womble Bond Dickinson Partners.
Rushton is a Chambers-ranked environmental attorney, recognized for her legal acumen on complex real estate and corporate transactions, who also advises a diverse range of clients on compliance with federal, state, and local environmental, health, and safety laws and regulations.
At Womble, Rushton serves as Co-Head of the firm’s Business Litigation Practice Group, the largest of Womble’s practice groups with more than 250 attorneys. She also serves as Co-Head of the Energy and Natural Resources Sector and Head of the firm’s Renewable Energy Subsector.
In the community, she serves as a Trustee to the Tinina Q. Cade Foundation. She also is a member of Commercial Real Estate Women (CREW) and the Women’s Council on Energy and the Environment.
Stone, the Managing Partner of Womble’s Charlotte office, is a proven business litigation attorney with a track record of success representing clients in high-stakes disputes and investigations. She also maintains a robust education practice, supporting schools, colleges, universities, and their boards in handling disputes involving significant financial or reputational stakes.
For 10 months, Stone co-led a high profile comprehensive internal investigation at the request of the Board of Trustees of a state public school retirement system with $70 billion in assets. The investigation was successfully concluded, and the results were shared with the Board, interested stakeholders, the Department of Justice, and the media.
Stone served for more than a decade on the United Way of Central Carolinas Youth and Children Investment Council, including four years as Chair. She currently serves as President of the Mecklenburg County Bar Association for 2025-26.
This year’s North Carolina Lawyers Weekly 50 Most Influential Women were honored at an October 28th event at The Union at Station West in Charlotte. Oher Womble attendees included attorneys Taber Cathcart, Debbie Harden, and Ellen Lloyd.
