Jeff Whittle Discusses Patent Sales Trend with IAM
Apr 17 2025
Womble Bond Dickinson Houston Office Managing Partner Jeff Whittle is quoted in a new IAM article titled “Trend Watch: New Corporations Selling Patents for the First Time”.
In the past 12-18 months, many organizations are monetizing patents for the first time, particularly as more sophisticated patent analytics tools help IP owners determine which patents to sell, keep, and license.
“There is a better understanding of patents and the potential value of patents, in general, than there was previously. Over time, that’s been developed, and they’ve also understood how they can reduce the risk of blowback on them trying to sell their patents” Whittle, who’s evaluated eight to 10 for-sale patent packages in the past three years for his energy industry clients, said.
“They get pressure from management to cull their patent assets and decide which ones are valuable. Particularly CEOs and capital expenditures are such that they have to prioritize the top five or 10 goals of the company technology wise…. They’re seeing the value of selling it off or licensing it.”
