SC – Gordon Schreck, a recently retired partner in Womble Bond Dickinson’s Charleston office, has been honored with the Maritime Association of South Carolina’s prestigious Beacon Award for “his distinguished service to the maritime industry”. The award was presented February 9 at the 2018 Annual Meeting & Gala, attended by some 650 Association members, state and local lawmakers, and others involved in the transportation and logistics sector.

Beacon Award has traditionally been given to recognize distinguished careers in the Port of Charleston’s maritime transportation industry, but Schreck was the first practicing attorney to receive the award. It was presented to him by Capt. Whit Smith, President of the Charleston Harbor Pilots’ Assoc., and a member of the board of the South Carolina State Ports Authority. In making the presentation, Capt. Smith noted Schreck had been involved, as counsel for shipowner interests, in virtually every major marine casualty case at the Port of Charleston in the last 50 years.

Gordon Schreck - Prior to assuming retired partner status on January 1, Schreck devoted his practice to the representation of shipowners and their marine insurers, in matters involving marine finance, and maritime casualties and disputes of all types, including crew and passenger injuries, cargo damage, collisions, and oil spills. He formerly led the firm’s Admiralty and Maritime Practice Team and remains active in various groups within the maritime transportation industry and admiralty bar. He is the co-founder and chair of the Charleston Maritime Law Institute at the Charleston School of Law.
