This event took place on February 15, 2023.

Womble Bond Dickinson Partner Michael Sullivan discussed “Developing a Compliance Program” at the American Home Furnishings Alliance (AHFA) Formaldehyde Rule Workshop. The event took place at the Conference Center at Guilford Technical Community College in Colfax, N.C.

The workshop assisted these member companies in preparing to comply with the last milestone in the formaldehyde rule: the March 22, 2024 deadline for purchasing and using only no-added formaldehyde (NAF) or phenol resins to adhere wood or bamboo veneers to EPA-certified hardwood plywood, medium density fiberboard or particleboard panels.

Companies that “fabricate” furniture using laminated composite wood products that have not switched to an NAF or phenol resin by the March 22, 2024 deadline will be considered “panel producers” under the rule and subject to all record-keeping and third-party certification requirements currently applied only to panel producers. Sullivan’s presentation addressed strategies for managing a company’s risk factors related to formaldehyde rule compliance.
