Womble Bond Dickinson Partner Doug Butler will speak at the Captive Insurance Companies Association (CICA) International Conference. The conference takes place March 8-10 in Palm Desert, Calif.

Butler will participate in a panel discussion titled “IRS and Captives—Today and Tomorrow.” The panel will examine recent court decisions involving small captive insurance companies, including at least one opinion that is more favorable to taxpayers than prior rulings. The discussion will explore whether this decision signals a shift toward more favorable outcomes or instead underscores the ongoing difficulty taxpayers face in this environment.

Panelists will also address the implications of recent opinions for larger captives.  Additional topics include the Treasury’s issuance of micro captive regulations classifying certain arrangements as listed transactions or transactions of interest, changes in IRS enforcement resources, and the impact of recently enacted tax legislation. Audience questions are encouraged as the panel considers what these developments mean for both large and small captives now and in the future.

Butler will be joined by Kacie Dillon of Silver Law, PLC, and Charles “Chaz” Lavelle of Dentons Bingham Greenebaum.
