Womble Bond Dickinson Partner Joe Whitley will moderate the “Sanctions and Export Controls” panel discussion at the 40th Annual ABA White Collar Crime Institute.

The panel will examine the methods used by the United States to impede the flow of weapons, property and funds to countries and leaders in politics involved in, and businessmen who support such, conflicts, including aggression, as well as to deter and preempt nations and individuals involved in criminal activities.

Whitley will be joined in the discussion by:

  • Kara Bombach of Greenberg Traurig and Roscoe Howard of Barnes & Thornburg, who will provide their private sector perspective.
  • Opher Shweiki of Akin Gump, who will provide his perspective from his tenure at the Bureau of Industry and Security.
  • Rachel Fiorill of Morrison Foerster, who will provide her insights related to the Office of Foreign Assets Control of the U.S. Department of Treasury.  
  • David Newman, who will provide his experience as former Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General for the National Security Division at the U.S. Department of Justice.
  • David A. Thompson of Thomson Reuters Special Services. He will share his perspective from having served over 25 years with the Homeland Security Investigations division at the Department of Homeland Security.

The ABA White Collar Crime Institute, which brings together federal and state judges and prosecutors, law enforcement officials, defense attorneys, corporate in-house counsel, and members of the academic community, takes place March 4-7 in Miami. The Sanctions and Export Controls panel discussion will be held Thursday, March 6th at 2:45 p.m.
