Thomas focuses on commercial disputes both at the High Court and has acted in arbitrations under all of the major institutional rules, as well as ad hoc arbitrations primarily for insurers, reinsurers and financial institutions.  His cases generally involve complex jurisdictional issues.  

In his career he has acted against the Syrian Government in English Commercial Court proceedings to enforce a US judgment, an ad hoc arbitration defending a multi-million Euro claim insurer against allegations of claims mishandling and High Court proceedings for a large financial services firm regarding allegations of misfeasance in the Caribbean. 

Experience

Examples of experience include advising:

  • Acting for insurers in the recovery of USD 54 million from the Syrian state by way of enforcing a US judgment in England & Wales
  • Advising an insurer in a trade credit dispute over the creation of a charge over goods located in West Africa
  • Representing an insurer, in ad-hoc arbitration, defending a EUR 64 million claim from a range of allegations including claims mishandling in southern Europe  
  • Advising an English local authority in a litigation against high street banks which transferred funds to third parties without authority.
