Womble Bond Dickinson Mining Sector Team attorneys Francisco Balduzzi (U.S.) Colin Graham (UK) and José Luis Vittor (U.S.) all have key roles in the International Bar Association’s Annual Conference. The event takes place October 4-9 in Copenhagen.
Balduzzi will co-chair a session titled, “Carbon Trading on the Rise: A Growing Niche Area for Lawyers.” Both emission trading systems (ETS) and voluntary carbon markets (VCM) are market-based approaches aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) as part of the larger climate change action plans and goals of nations and companies. Whereas the EU ETS was established in 2005, an increasing number of countries, or states within countries, including in the Global South, have more recently adopted legislation to facilitate these carbon trading markets. This session seeks to provide an overview of the different regulatory regimes, as well as lessons learned from more mature markets, the projected growth and opportunities, the experience with ERPAs and the role of lawyers as their corporate clients increasingly take part in these carbon trading mechanisms.
Graham will take part in a panel discussion on “International Investment Treaties: How They Are Reshaping the Mining Industry.” Several bilateral and multilateral treaties have recently been (re)negotiated to enable access to natural resources, including the US/Ukraine Treaty and others involving Australia, China, and Japan. This panel will analyse how these treaties influence investment, geopolitics, and the global mining landscape.
Vittor is a member of the Energy, Environment, Natural Resources and Infrastructure Law Section (SEERIL) Council and will be taking part in that section’s Open Business Meeting.
