Womble Bond Dickinson ranks as one of the top patent firms in the U.S. based on obtaining utility patents from the USPTO.

The Harrity Analytics Team examined data from more than 700 law firms that obtained at least 50 utility patents last year. Womble Bond Dickinson ranked #19 for successfully obtaining U.S. patents with 1,699 patents in 2021. That was an increase of 3.8 percent from 2020, when the firm obtained 1,637 patents.  When considering only US patents with no foreign priority, which typically represents innovation originating in the United States, Womble Bond Dickinson was ranked #11 with 1,163 patents.

WBD also earned high marks for obtaining patents for particular technologies. Harrity Analytics ranked the firm:

  • #9 for Computer Architecture, Software & Information Security patents;
  • #14 for Computer Networks, Multiplex, Cable and Cryptography/Security patents; 
  • #24 for Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing and Products patents; 
  • #29 for Transportation, Construction, Agriculture, Licensing and Review patents; and
  • #29 for Communications.

In addition, WBD ranked in the top 10 percent of all evaluated firms for obtaining patents in Biotechnology & Organics, Chemical and Materials Engineering, Semiconductors, Electrical and Optical Systems and Components, and Medical Devices.
