With a robust maritime practice defending ship owners and charterers, Ryan also drafts and negotiates transportation agreements, charter parties, and vessel financing transactions. In other aspects of his law practice, Ryan defends contractors in construction defect cases, litigates contract disputes, and handles product liability and premises liability cases.
As a former seagoing engineer in the United States Merchant Marine, Ryan has firsthand experience in the technical design, operation, maintenance and repair of general cargo ships, product tankers, container ships, bulk carriers, and pure car/truck carriers. Ryan is on-call 24/7 to investigate and protect vessel interests in connection with machinery failure, groundings, collisions, wet and dry cargo claims, pollution incidents, dock damage, personal injuries to longshoremen and crew, as well as to provide immediate response in MARPOL criminal defense matters, and to handle vessel arrest actions. In this regard, Ryan has capably represented the vessel owners and charterers alike hailing from Bermuda and the Caribbean, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, New York, Russia, Scandinavia, Singapore and the United Kingdom.

- Secured summary judgment for vessel owner where a longshoreman fell in the cargo hold during cargo operations aboard a vessel in the Port of Savannah, Georgia, affirmed on appeal to the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals. Miller v. Navalmar (UK) Ltd., 685 F. App’x 751 (11th Cir. 2017).
- In a case of wrongful arrest of client’s bulk carrier vessel in Morocco, seized assets located in Georgia of the arresting party, an entity based in Dubai, and worked with co-counsel in Louisiana to seize additional assets located in New Orleans, to compel arresting party to arbitrate client’s wrongful arrest claim in London.
