WINSTON-SALEM, NC—Each year, counterfeit goods, pirated software and trade secret theft costs the US economy hundreds of billions of dollars. Federal law enforcement officials say the Chinese government plays a key role in unlawfully appropriating intellectual property and trade secrets from US businesses.

On August 5, Womble Bond Dickinson’s Winston-Salem office hosted a session on “China: The Risk to Corporate America”. The guest speaker for this event was FBI Special Agent Lou Velasco. Special Agent Velasco works directly with companies to help advise them on and protect them from the threat of economic espionage. He discussed the risks companies face in the global marketplace, and how they can safeguard their important assets.

Womble Bond Dickinson attorney Kurt Stakeman organized this event. Stakeman participates in Red Dart, a joint effort between business leaders and federal agencies to reduce the risks of economic espionage.
