CORONADO, CALIF.—Womble Bond Dickinson was well represented at the BRC Food Safety Americas Conference, which took place May 21-22.

US attorney Kurt Weaver and UK consultant Nicky Strong joined to given a presentation on “Understanding the Legal Requirements for Food Labeling and Responsibilities for Labeling Nutritional Content and Allergens.”

In addition, attorneys Russ Ferguson, Mark Itzkoff and Kristin Walker-Probst and Client Service Director Sylvia Stock attended the Food Safety Americas Conference.

The conference presented insights and updated designed to improve food safety inspections. Specific topics discussed included:

  • Preparing for and passing inspections;
  • Food safety culture and training;
  • Identifying and controlling contamination;
  • Future-proofing food safety; and
  • Traceability within the supply chain.

A former federal prosecutor, Russ Ferguson represents clients in a broad range of complex litigation matters, focusing both on white collar criminal defense and complex business litigation. His practice includes representing clients at all stages of federal and state litigation, including on appeal. He also guides clients in international arbitration.

Mark Itzkoff is an experienced food and drug attorney with a deep and diverse background in food-related issues as well as implant and device regulations and industrial, environmental and other regulatory matters. He has worked with the EPA, FDA and White House on pesticide registration issues, and has successfully petitioned the FDA and USDA for new food additive and GRAS food ingredients. He has a particular interest in and vast experience with food packaging materials and labeling.

Nicky Strong is a UK-based consultant who advises clients consumer law, product safety, compliance, labelling and packaging issues, as well as brand advertising and marketing issues.

Kristin Walker-Probst is an experienced trial lawyer and civil litigator, having tried well over 100 cases in both State and Federal Court. Since 1999, she has tried over 60 jury trials and 75 bench trials/juvenile adjudications. Her litigation background includes cases involving financial services, general business litigation, personal injury and labor and employment issues.

Kurt Weaver leads Womble Bond Dickinson’s Food and Beverage Regulation and Litigation Team . He counsels agricultural product and consumer goods companies on labeling and marketing issues and provides guidance to food industry clients on such issues as food-borne illness responses and marketing to children.
