WILMINGTON, DEL.—Womble Bond Dickinson’s Wilmington office hosted a free pro bono CLE seminar on “How to Handle a Protection from Abuse Case” on Jan. 23. The seminar was presented by Delaware Volunteer Legal Services (“DVLS”).
Speakers Jacki Chacona and Tom McDonough led participants through a two-hour primer on handling protection from abuse cases, including such topics as:
- Applicable law
- Definition of abuse
- Protected class issues
- Evidentiary issues
- Types of hearings and orders
- PFA Order v. Criminal “No-Contact” Order
- Firearm Restriction Provisions
- Registration of foreign PFA
DVLS was impressed with the turnout for the event and said it was one of the largest training events in recent memory.
Mark Desgrosseilliers, Ericka Johnson, and Nick Verna frequently volunteer to handle PFA trials, which are held on Wednesdays and Fridays in the Delaware Family Court.
Desgrosseilliers also chairs the firm’s Pro Bono Committee.
