The Womble Carlyle family mourns the loss of Andy Copenhaver, a long-time partner and one of the firm’s most accomplished litigators.

Andy started with the firm in 1972 after graduating from Duke University and the University of North Carolina School of Law. During his more than 40-year career, he represented many companies in high-stakes business and antitrust litigation. Perhaps his most famous case involved representing Food Lion as lead trial counsel in the landmark Food Lion v. ABC/Capital Cities case. Andy regularly was recognized by Chambers USA, North Carolina Super Lawyers and The Best Lawyers in America as a top practitioner in his field.

He served in leadership roles in a number of professional organizations during his career, including as Chair of the North Carolina Federal Bar Advisory Council (1995-96) and the US District Court Magistrate Selection Committee (2011-12).

A memorial service for Andy will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, October 16 at Centenary United Methodist Church, 646 W. Fifth Street in Winston-Salem, followed by a reception at Old Town Club.

We wish to extend our condolences to Andy’s wife, Anne, and children, Will, Catherine and Drew.
