BOSTON – Angel Taveras, former Providence, R.I. mayor and prominent New England litigator, announced today he has joined the Boston office of transatlantic law firm Womble Bond Dickinson (US) LLP.

Many credit Taveras’ leadership as mayor from 2011-2015 with saving Providence from near bankruptcy. That passion for government and community is reflected in his legal practice as well. Taveras, who joins the firm from Greenberg Traurig, regularly represents municipalities in restructuring, public finance, and complex litigation matters, including representing government entities such as the US Virgin Islands and the Rhode Island Secretary of State. He also has extensive experience in bridging the public/private gap with his work advising corporate clients on government relations matters.

“I’ve joined Womble because it is an outstanding firm with a 150-year history and commitment to innovation and results. In just a few short years in Boston, Womble has established itself with a prominent intellectual property practice group. I look forward to helping to grow Womble’s litigation and government relations practice group.”

And while he will be based out of the firm’s Boston office, Taveras said he isn’t leaving his beloved Rhode Island anytime soon and will continue to have a working and civic presence in Providence.

Womble Bond Dickinson officially opened its Boston office in 2017 and quickly established its market prominence as an intellectual property law firm serving the region’s technology and biotech industries. Office Managing Partner Sarah Keefe said with Taveras’ arrival the firm will now launch the next phase of an aggressive growth strategy across a range of practice areas.

“We are incredibly honored to have Angel join Womble’s Boston office,” Keefe said. “When we opened this office, we did so with the intention of serving the most dynamic and innovative clients in the New England region. Angel shares that vision and will be instrumental in furthering the broad range of legal talent we offer to our New England clients.

Chris Jones, who leads the firm’s Business Litigation Practice Group and serves as a member of the firm’s executive committee, added that Taveras’ ability to connect people and ideas to form a big picture fits perfectly with the firm’s focus.

“Womble Bond Dickinson is located in many of the key innovation centers throughout the US and the UK and brings the benefits of this geographic perspective to bear with our Boston clients. Complex litigation goes back to the roots of Womble’s 150 years of experience. Welcoming Angel to this team further positions Womble to serve the New England region and provides our clients with the expertise needed to thrive in a globally connected marketplace.”
