WASHINGTON, D.C.—Womble Carlyle attorneys Cathy Hinger, Debbie Israel, Alex Rothschild and Kurt Weaver attended the Women’s Bar Association/WBA Foundation 2016 Annual Dinner, which took place May 25th at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C.

The Annual Dinner honored the Women’s Bar Association’s 2016 Woman Lawyer of the Year, Lt. Gen. Flora D. Darpino. The Judge Advocate General of the United States Army, Lt. Gen. Darpino is the first woman to hold this position since the first Judge Advocate General was appointed by George Washington in 1775.

In addition, the Janet Reno Torchbearer Award was given to US Attorney General Loretta E. Lynch. The Janet Reno Torchbearer Award recognizes exceptional women lawyers, their achievements, and the trails they have blazed for those women who have followed, and is reserved for those rare occasions when the accomplishments of an individual are so extraordinary that they should be recognized.

The theme for the 2015-2016 bar year and 2016 Woman Lawyer of the Year is “Advancing Together.” As an organization, the WBA is committed to being the preeminent professional and personal resource for women at all points in their legal career.

About the Women's Bar Association

Founded in 1917, the Women’s Bar Association is one of the oldest voluntary bar associations in the United States dedicated to the advancement of women in the law. The Annual Dinner helps support the ongoing efforts of the WBA to maintain the honor and integrity of the legal profession, to promote the administration of justice, and to advance and protect the interests of women lawyers. Proceeds from the Annual Dinner also help support the WBA Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization whose mission is to leverage the generosity of lawyers and friends to support nonprofits that serve the legal and related needs of women and girls in the DC Metropolitan community.
