Womble Bond Dickinson’s Jeff Widdison Speaks on Criminal Grounds of Removability at National Immigration Law Conference

Womble Bond Dickinson attorney Jeff Widdison recently participated as a panelist at the American Immigration Lawyers Association 2021 Annual Conference.  The national conference this year was held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Widdison took part in an advanced panel discussion on “Criminal Grounds of Removability: Categorical, Modified Categorical & Circumstance Specific Approaches.” Panelists discussed the different analytical rules used to determine when an individual’s criminal conviction adversely affects their immigration status. Discussions included when to apply the categorical approach, how to analyze and limit the use of the circumstance-specific approach, and how to satisfy the realistic probability test when it applies. 

The virtual panel discussion took place on June 12. Secretary of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas, was the keynote speaker for the event.

Widdison is an immigration attorney that represents clients in employment-based permanent residency cases, consular processing, nonimmigrant visa applications, naturalizations, family-based filings, administrative appeals to the AAO and BIA, employer sanctions, petitions for review with U.S. Circuit Courts, and mandamus and APA causes of action filings with U.S. District Courts.
