The IChemE Silver Book Professional Services Contract

The Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) launched its “Silver Book” at Keating Chambers on Thursday 9th February 2017. This is the first completely new edition to the IChemE suite since 2003. The Silver Book is a “Professional Services” for contract engineering, project management, contract management and other professional services. It fills a key gap in the IChemE’s current range. The availability of a standard form consultants’ appointment contract to sit alongside the Red, Green and Burgundy books is very welcome.

Going up in smoke - invalidity for added matter

Recently in Nicocigs Limited v Fontem Holdings 1 BV 2016 EWHC 2161 (2 September 2016), Fontem’s patent in the UK for an aerosol electronic cigarette EP (UK) No. 2022 349 B1 (the “Patent”) did not survive an attack brought against it launched by Nicocigs upon several grounds. As such, the judgment by the High Court provides a useful reminder of the rules in revocation actions relating to priority, added matter, novelty, inventive step and amendment.

The lesson from TalkTalk: Who is responsible for cyber security?

Clinton and Trump disagree on pretty much everything but even they agree that cyber security is now an issue so important that it needs to be directly addressed by the President of the United States. This is a message that should be heeded by everyone: cyber security needs to be led from the top.

Last October a cyber-attack at TalkTalk led to the data of 150,000 customers being stolen, including details of 15,000 bank accounts. This week, the Information Commissioner's Office laid the blame for incident at TalkTalk's door, hitting it with a record £400,000 fine.
