Brexit, the draft EU withdrawal agreement and what the immediate future holds for British politics and the Prime Minister were just some of the themes discussed by business leaders on Wednesday evening (14 November) at an event hosted by law firm Womble Bond Dickinson (WBD).

The WBD Business Leaders' Dinner took place at Lainston House Hotel in Winchester, with clients and guests hearing from keynote speaker Steve Richards, one of Britain's leading political analysts on a highly topical evening as Theresa May had just unveiled her draft withdrawal agreement earlier that day. A regular commentator on radio and TV, including as a panellist on BBC One's Sunday Politics, Richards delivered a compelling speech, providing insights into the current political situation and the most recent developments.

Richards gave an engaging and animated speech stressing that this is an extraordinary and historic period for British politics, and it remains almost impossible to predict what will happen next.

The event also celebrated WBD's first anniversary, following its combination in November 2017 with US firm Womble Carlyle. Jon Hales, Partner and Head of WBD's Southampton office, commented:

"We had a fascinating evening with guests and clients, with a superb presentation from Steve Richards. The timing of the Prime Minister's announcement in Downing Street on the same day certainly focused minds on the political turmoil in the UK and what it could mean for UK business.

"The evening also presented the perfect opportunity for us to celebrate our first year as WBD. We chose Womble Carlyle as our combination partner because of our common values when it comes to our regional heritage, something we are all deeply passionate about. We can support our clients with a unique offering of national and international experience on their doorstep and provide our regional market with expanded capability and greater commercial opportunities that help showcase Southampton and the wider region on the transatlantic stage."

Ranking in the UK's top 20 law firms, WBD provides legal expertise in eleven key sectors from across eight offices in the UK and 18 offices in the US. It is one of the largest law firms in Southampton where it employs more than 150 staff.
